[My personal attempt to translate
the Norwegian review:]
To begin with a short summary. Jens
Haugan has a past as the drummer of Thule on their debut album "Ultima
Thule" (1987). Since then he has been occupied with many different
things. During the recent years he has produced a certain number
of solo CDs of the home-made kind and small stock. Haugan plays
all the instruments himself (guitar, bass etc.) and also acts as
a singer on these recordings.
A couple of years ago we received
the CD "Tales from Thule" which was Haugan's tribute to
his old band Thule. "Last Man Standing" is recorded in
the period August 2005 to March 2006 and is meant as a continuation
of Haugan's CD "Monagamy" from 2004. As he points out
himself, he has moved slightly away from the expression on "Tales
from Thule" and made an album without keyboards. The result
is a CD that (naturally) focuses more on Haugan's guitar work. It
may seem that the guitar over time has become Haugan's main instrument
and this is also where he is most convincing.
Genrewise this is a form of artrock
with a touch of progressive rock and folk rock. After a somewhat
laidback opening that is characterized by 12-string guitars and
strong vocal ("Last Man Standing/Lost Treasure"), the
fuzz box comes out on the very much heavier "Now is the time".
This is not much unlike Hawkind from the 80's . While talking about
references, "Little Bambi" doubtlessly invokes certain
associations to Genesis, while "So Many Years" without
any problems could have been a part of the Jethro Tull's later productions,
just to have said that.
Some songs do have a certain ethnical
touch and he also sometimes plays with several psychedelic features.
Even with elements of flamenco-inspired guitar! Haugan has been
good at spicing the sound and especially the blending of acoustic
and electric sound is exciting. At last, I find parts of the material
rather interesting and I like especially the heavier elements with
an echo from the early 80's, spacerock elements and the more melancholic
times. If this sounds interesting to you logg on to www.jenshaugan.com
and check out Jens Haugan's musical art.
